UN to investigate US rights abuses

The UN has called on all governments to cooperate with its investigation into secret detention centers around the world including those run by the US CIA. The investigation is also expected to look into the ‘rendition’ flights that have secretly transferred terror suspects to various countries for interrogation which includes the use of torture.

It is now acknowledged that during the reign of George Bush, the US apprehended people it suspected of "terrorism" and took them to third countries for interrogation. The new US President, Barack Obama, has vowed to close the detention facilities set up by the CIA, as well as the controversial US prison in Guantanamo Bay. However, the UN’s special rapporteur on human rights has admitted that its too early to confirm if the rendition practices have ceased as yet.

Those implicated in cooperating with the US in this abominable practice include the UK, Pakistan, Morocco, Thailand, Romania and Poland according to sources (Al Jazeera). In view of the recent warrant issued on President Omar Basher of Sudan by the International Criminal Court, some observers have asked why George Bush has been exempted from such charges.
